Spotify launches social media presence

Music streaming provider Spotify has launched a new version of its service that allows users to upload playlists and manage their music from social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

Using the Spotify Facebook application, both premium and free subscribers can now inflict their questionable music taste on friends, display which songs and albums they've been listening to as well as publish playlists for everyone else's aural enjoyment.

Twitter users can also get in on the action by sharing their music via a link.

Spotify's synchronisation with social media is widely thought to be yet another move to bring down digital music giant iTunes.

In a report by the Financial Times, Spotify foudner Daniel Elk said:

“We want to move people from the ownership model to the access model.

“We know that this is a huge shift. People are used to owning music – but more and more people are becoming comfortable with accessing music and services in the cloud.”

Despite a following of some 7million European subscribers, Spotify has yet to put any major dent in the iTunes armour; Apple currently holds the payment details of 125million users whereas only 320,000 Spotify users actually pay for the service.

The new service is available now and is free to all.
